Bangladesh Fall to 13-0 Defeat Against India in Asian Champions Trophy Opener
India dominated from the start in Jalandhar, with Mandeep Singh scoring a hat-trick as Bangladesh endured another heavy defeat against their regional rivals.

Bangladesh's men's hockey side suffered a heavy 13-0 defeat to hosts India in their opening match of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 on Tuesday evening. The contest took place at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar and underlined the significant difference in class between the two teams.
India, the defending champions and five-time winners of the tournament, controlled the game from the opening minutes and kept the majority of the play inside Bangladesh's half. The hosts earned a penalty corner almost immediately, and captain Harmanpreet Singh converted it with a powerful drag-flick in the second minute to open the scoring. Just a minute later, Mandeep Singh finished from a pass at the top of the circle to double the advantage. Mandeep struck again in the tenth minute, and Shilanand Lakra added a fourth goal before the first quarter ended, leaving Bangladesh already four goals behind.
The second quarter brought further pressure. Abhishek scored in the eighteenth minute and Nilakanta Sharma extended the lead to 6-0 in the twenty-sixth minute. Bangladesh's goalkeeper made a few useful saves, yet India continued to create opportunities through both open play and set pieces. By half-time the score stood at 6-0, with the outcome of the match already clear.
After the interval India maintained the same intensity. Dilpreet Singh scored twice in quick succession early in the third quarter, first from a penalty corner and then from open play. Harmanpreet Singh added his second goal shortly afterwards, taking the score to 9-0. In the final quarter the scoring continued without pause. Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner in the forty-sixth minute, Mandeep completed his hat-trick with a sharp deflection in the fifty-fourth minute, and Hardik Singh struck twice in the closing minute to complete the 13-0 result.
Mandeep Singh finished with three goals, while Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh each scored twice. Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma and Jugraj Singh also appeared on the scoresheet. The match highlighted India's superior fitness, technical execution and ability to convert set-piece opportunities at a high rate. For Bangladesh the outcome continues a familiar pattern against India. This was the third successive encounter in which the side conceded ten or more goals to the same opponent, following a 10-0 defeat at the recent Asian Games in Japan and a 12-0 loss at the 2023 Asian Games in China. Such repeated heavy margins point to persistent structural challenges in preparation, match exposure and overall development at the senior level.
India's victory provides a strong start to their title defence in front of a home crowd in Punjab, where international hockey has returned after a long gap. Bangladesh, meanwhile, face the task of regrouping quickly for their remaining group fixtures. While the result was expected given the ranking difference, the scale of the defeat again draws attention to the need for longer-term investment in Bangladesh's hockey programme if the team is to narrow the gap with Asia's stronger sides in the years ahead. The tournament continues with India next scheduled to face China, while Bangladesh prepare for their subsequent group-stage match.
